"How do I coach a game?" A great coaching article!

Hadley Winthrop | BEcorp
Sometimes the question is “how do I coach a game”? but why is it not ,“should I coach a game”?  I am going to try and set forth some objective arguments to both questions and I welcome your feedback to this discussion.
Our last newsletter spoke about the importance of “visual cues” while coaching. The importance being that everything in training (or as much as possible), should be as close to a game or match environment as possible. Our coaching points should therefore be the same, meaning that the athlete must react to an opponent’s foot movement, rotation of the trunk, displacement of the hip and so on… So what about if the athlete cannot see you? Is an audio cue enough? Can the athlete know exactly what you are talking about when you call out across the field/court/arena to them? What about if they make the same mistake again? Will they get told again? What about on game day? Does this change?
Scenario 1: You have been coaching a team for 10 years, you feel as though they should know the material and know the plays but they get it wrong on game day… What do you do? Do you call out the plays/flaws in their technique and assume they know what you mean?
Scenario 2: You have been coaching a team for 5 years and the players are no older than 12, does that make a difference in your coaching technique on game day? You have still been coaching them for a long period of time, should they know the material by now?
Scenario 3: You have 1 player on the field that keeps making a mistake, the same mistake you have been working to correct in training. Do you call across the field/court/arena to communicate in front of the other teammates? Do you call commands to the player to help?
Let me help your thoughts to the above scenarios by adding some pepper to the salt with the following extremely objective comment I heard the other day… “If your player doesn’t know how to do it by game day then there’s no point coaching it now”.
A human is a cognitive learner by habit and trade. We learn by thought process, evaluation, study, repetition and analysis. Most importantly, we learn by encouragement and self efficacy – meaning that we judge ourselves based on our interpretation on what happened.
Next time you call out to a player, have this in your mind and think to yourself; Am I motivating my player? Will my player learn from my comment if he hasn’t got it right so far? Will my player respond well to my tone of voice? How else could I address the situation?
How about we wait until the break, half time, end of the round, quarter or time out to pull a player out to the side and show them what we would like so that they can become a cognitive learner once more?
A coach never stops learning – Even during a game!

Crush Skills Session, Clinics, and Camps 2011-2012

Dear Coaches, Parents, and Players,
HOCKEY is finally here!  We hope everyone is well rested from an enjoyable and relaxing summer break.  Most teams have just started and hopefully your season is going well thus far.
This summer Crush Hockey held their first annual Camp Crush during the first week of August.  It was awesome!  The kids had a great time, learned a lot and came back for more each day.
Coach Shaun McGinty hosted a variety of individual sessions and small group sessions throughout the summer.  During each session the kids worked extremely hard and developed their game.  Coach Shaun also had the opportunity to work with the Wildcats Hockey Organization throughout their preseason skates.  He instructed the preseason power skating clinics for the Peewee – Midget teams.  Additionally, Coach Shaun was asked to help with the Bantam A preseason camp.  During this week long camp, Coach Shaun not only instructed the on ice skating and skills but the off ice sessions as well.  It was a great week of hockey with a great group of kids.
Throughout this season Crush Hockey will be offering skills sessions, clinics and camps.  Coaches and Parents please note that "Crush Sunday Night Skills" will begin September 25th thru December 18th.  Limited space available!
**All clinics and camps will be capped to keep a low player to coach ratio.  Players may pre-register or place a deposit to hold a spot for their desired Crush Hockey Session.**

Team Building Ideas

Great ideas from: “@hockeyshare: 10 Early Season Team Building Ideas goo.gl/fb/ekXwB”

Getting a team to gel together can be a big task if you’ve got a lot of new players on your team.  Below is a list of ten ideas to improve your team’s chemistry early in the season.

Early Season Tournament/Road Trip – ideally, pick a tournament where you’re out of your home town and parents/players must stay in a hotel.  This lets players get to know each other away from the rink setting, and gives parents time to socialize in the evenings.   If you’re in a hotel and have time between games, try planning a team “pot-luck” lunch/dinner where players are required to attend as opposed to everyone heading their own direction for meals.
Ropes Courses – a ropes course will force players to work together as a team to achieve a common goal – just like in the season.  It will also force some players to address their fears (especially if you’re doing a high ropes course) and get support from their teammates.
Team Building Activities – choose a day and location away from the rink and plan group challenges (mental as well as physical).  Activities that force players to communicate and interact are excellent in establishing trust among teammates.  For some ideas on activities, check out our blog post on Team Building Resources.
Team Cook Out – this can be done at the rink, or if a parent is kind enough to open their home, at a family’s house.  Ideally there would be an activity the players can do (pool, ping pong, swimming, etc.) which will focus them to one area.  Avoid allowing video games to be the central focus, as the amount of communication and group interaction is severely lessened.
Change Locker Room Seats – players love to get into a routine and sit next to their buddies in the locker room.  This can be okay as the season progresses, but if you’ve got a team with a lot of new skaters, forcing players to sit in different locations will cause them to talk with and get to know people outside their small clique.
Paint Balling - not every team will have access to this, but teams that do will find that their players will enjoy the competition and have a great time being together away from the rink.  You could also plan for a team cookout after the paint balling event!
Team Workout – you see this in the NHL quite a bit – players and coaches will do team runs, bike rides, canoeing, etc.  Although it may not be quite as much fun as some of the other activities listed above, you’ll be getting the group together and also helping their overall conditioning.
Mix Lines / D Partners – early in the season, forcing players to play with skaters other than the one or two players they’re used to will not only get players to work together and communicate, but will prepare older players for future tryout camps where they’ll be playing with skaters they’ve never played with before.
Team Video – have some fun with this one – especially early in the season. Instead of doing game tape review or something expected, have some fun and watch an entertaining video or movie.  Maybe even get some pizzas for the players (without telling them).  For older groups, The Tournament is a great choice.  For younger groups, Miracle may be a better idea.
Personal Information – before or after a practice, hold a team gathering in the locker room and have players get up and introduce themselves one-by-one.  It is also helpful to have 3 or 4 questions they need to answer while it is their turn.  Simple questions like the following tend to work well: favorite hockey team, one thing we didn’t know about you, home town, etc.

Crush Private and Small Group Sessions

8/11/11 Session One:
Coach Shaun worked with a Comcast Squirt AAA defensemen and a Junior defensemen who will be playing for the Cranston Reds in the MJHL.  During this session the players worked on footwork, transitioning, blue-line skill, attaching the slot and other shooting areas; as well as defensive zone escapes.  Both players worked extremely hard and pushed themselves through a variety of drills.
Coach Shaun is able to differentiate his instruction in order to meet age appropriate skill and individual needs.
             Session Two:
Coach Shaun worked with two Wildcat Squirt AA forwards, two Wildcat Peewee AA forwards, and one junior from Council Rock South High School.  During this session the players worked on stick handling, edge control, footwork, transitional play, blue-line skill, breakouts, and one-on-one positional play.  All of the players were very attentive and receptive to everything that Coach Shaun had to offer.

Note to Crush Hockey athletes:
Good luck with your up and coming conditioning camps and seasons.  Please stay in touch with Crush Hockey throughout your year and let us know how you are doing.  Also, please continue to follow us at:

Crush Hockey will be offering clinics throughout the season.  Tentatively we are looking at a 3-Day “Winter-Fest Crush Session” that will be held over winter break for those athletes looking to keep sharp over the holiday season.  Additionally, we will be hosting a 2-Day “End to End Hockey” – skills, drills & conditioning – over the spring/Easter break.

Crush Hockey Private and Small Group Sessions

8/8/11 Session One:
Coach Shaun worked with a Comcast Squirt AAA player during a private session.  This particular athlete plays defense and his father requested that he work on his backward skating and small area skill.  During the hour private session, Coach Shaun concentrated transitioning footwork, keeping the players shoulders back and chin-up while transition and making strong pivots.  Coach Shaun also worked on building upon the players stick handling skill and shooting from the defense position.
           Session Two:
Coach Shaun worked with a goaltender that will be attending St. Joseph’s University in the fall as a freshman.  He will be competing with two returning goalies and others for a starting position.  He is a hard working goalie that puts in time both on and off the ice.  Every summer he attends a weeklong goaltending camp in Canada and this summer he found extra ice with Crush Hockey to get additional work.
While working with the goaltender, Coach Shaun also guided instruction for an athlete that will be playing for the Philadelphia Revolution CHA Junior Hockey Team.  Through a variety of shooting drills and skills; both the goaltender and CHA Junior Revolution forward got a great workout.

8/10/11 Session One:
Coach Shaun worked with one Comcast Squirt AAA athlete and two Junior level athletes.  One of the Junior athletes will be playing for the Philadelphia Revolution CHA and the other will be playing for the Cranston Reds in the MJHL.  Although the age gap is clearly a large one, Coach Shaun is able to directly instruct and manage the ice accordingly.
All three players are preparing themselves for the season to begin.  They are working hard to fine-tune their skating and skills prior to the beginning of their conditioning camps.  Together the athletes and Coach Shaun worked through a variety of transition skating and skill drills that require the athletes to control their upper body while their lower body is working.  Following the skating instruction Coach Shaun then worked on defensive zone escapes, breakout passing, neutral-zone passing and blue line skills.  It was a great hour of development!
         Session Two:
Coach Shaun worked with two AA Squirts and one AA Peewee from the Wildcats Ice Hockey Club.  During this session Coach Shaun concentrated on quick footwork, transitioning, puck control, stick handling and shooting.  All three of the players were very attentive and worked hard throughout the entire hour.  I am looking forward to our next session this Thursday at The Rink at Warwick.
